 The first step towards qualifying for a home is to call (904) 798-4529 and complete the prescreening process over the phone or complete the 0% Mortgage Interest Form.
Potential homebuyers must be a Duval County resident or employee for at least six (6) months. In addition, applicants must demonstrate:
Need- Living in inadequate shelter because of problems with heating, water supply, structure safety, overcrowding, etc. -or-
- Spending more than 40% of income on housing -or-
- Residing in a drug- or crime-infested neighborhood -or-
- Currently residing in Section 8 or public housing
Ability to Pay - A stable, monthly income sufficient to meet routine expenses, maintain the house, and make monthly mortgage payments -and-
- If employed, stable employment for at least one (1) year -and-
- Income between 30% and 60% of median income for Duval County (see chart below) -and-
- Acceptable credit (minimum FICO score of 600) -and-
- Less than $1,500 delinquent debt -and-
- Make a down payment of $500 to select a property (full down payment will equal 1% of purchase price)
Willingness to Partner - Willingness to complete 300 plus hours of “sweat equity” -and-
- Accept a home in the neighborhoods where HabiJax serves -and-
- Accept the Repurchase Agreement -and-
- Participate in homebuyer education workshops

HabiJax families are supported through the home-buying experience by our staff of professionals who provide counsel in establishing and maintaining good credit, creating a family budget, setting aside funds for future maintenance, purchasing insurance, and many other effective homeownership skills.
Hicks Prep Club
The Hicks Prep Club is an enrichment program for students (grades 7-12), who reside in Jacksonville Housing Authority, Section 8, HabiJax properties. The Prep Club utilizes monthly meetings, an after school program, a book club, test prep, and other programs to assist students in reaching their full academic potential.
