The Ly Family’s Homeownership Journey
The Ly family, are first generation immigrants from Cambodia, had long dreamed of owning a home. With limited English proficiency, navigating the homebuying process in the United States seemed daunting. However, their determination and support from Habitat for Humanity helped them achieve their goal.
Facing Challenges Head-On
When the Ly family first applied to Habitat for Humanity’s affordable homeownership program, they were nervous about language barriers and unfamiliar terms. Habitat staff assured them that with the help of their youngest son (Paktra ) who is fluent in English would be able to successfully translate to ensure they fully understood each step of the process.
Sweat Equity Above and Beyond
The Ly family embraced the program’s sweat equity requirement with enthusiasm. Despite Rosie working long hours cleaning downtown office buildings, they made time to contribute to building their future home. Their son, Paktra, became a standout advocate, not only helping with construction but also translating for his parents
The family completed all the required sweat equity ahead of schedule, demonstrating their unwavering commitment. Their dedication caught the attention of Habitat staff and volunteers, who were moved by their story of perseverance.
