Meet Jim, one of our amazing HabiJax Volunteers! We’re highlighting Jim for Volunteer Appreciation Week for his long-time service with HabiJax. Learn more about Jim’s journey with us below!
Jim Meyers has been a construction volunteer with HabiJax for nearly 24 years! He volunteers 1-2 times per week and coordinates a group of churches to volunteer at least once a year. Most recently, Jim has volunteered as a team leader for the HabiJax 30th Anniversary Interfaith Build.
When asked why he chose to volunteer with HabiJax, Jim said, “I have always liked to build things and feel the need to give back to our community. The key approach that sets HabiJax apart from many other charities to me is the concept of a hand up instead of a handout. It is very rewarding to meet and work with the homeowners who work so hard to reach their dream of a new home.” To Jim, one of the greatest results after families achieve the dream of homeownership is that children are able to “grow up in a safe and well-constructed home and have a solid foundation as they go out on their own.”
He encourages others to get involved with HabiJax because volunteers can learn many construction skills and help build the community. If you’re as fortunate as Jim, you may even meet your significant other! Jim met his wife while volunteering on a construction site during a HabiJax Blitz Build!
Jim finished his military service in 1974 and has been in Jacksonville since. He is now retired, and when he is not volunteering with HabiJax he spends his week playing tennis and working on the facilities at his church.
HabiJax thanks Jim for his service and commitment to our country and our city!
