For the first time in her life, Chandra is becoming a homeowner. She first learned of HabiJax’s homeownership program through a friend and decided that it was time she too realized her dream of homeownership. She began her journey in December of 2017 and has been diligently working on completing her 300 sweat equity hours since then. Chandra’s favorite way to work on her hours is by volunteering at the front desk. She says she enjoys meeting new people and helping others understand what HabiJax does and its mission. When asked why that was so important she said, “So many people will not have the opportunity at an affordable mortgage and becoming a homeowner, and I get to tell people about the HabiJax program and implement God’s vision of giving.”
As a new homeowner, Chandra is most excited about her mortgage being more affordable than her rent and that each monthly payment is being invested in her own property rather than paying a landlord. In a recent report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition, Florida was reported as the 17th highest housing wage in the United States. A person making minimum wage would have to work 82 hours/week to afford the average 2 bedroom apartment (NLIHC Report) This is also why Chandra feels it’s important to share her journey and highlight the value of affordable homeownership. Chandra is also very excited to have her own yard and plant a big beautiful garden to enjoy.
