The best way to create change is to become a HabiJax Advocate.
Habitat for Humanity defines advocacy as “changing policies and systems to eliminate barriers to adequate, affordable housing in order to create a world where everyone has a decent place to live.” HabiJax is looking for volunteers to help advocate on behalf of affordable housing, whether it be through social media, contacting government officials or even meeting with HabiJax staff and local government officials face to face. If you are interested in becoming a HabiJax advocate, please contact our Community Engagement department for more information.
Cost of Home
Families all across the United States are paying too high a price to cover the cost of their home. In Florida, 1 in 6 households spend more than half of their income on housing.
To be considered “affordable,” housing expenses must be less than 30 percent of a family’s household income. But consider that today over 18 million U.S. households pay half or more of their income on a place to live. That means working families are forced to make impossible decisions between spending money on safe homes, nutritious food on the table, health care, reliable transportation or education needs. Which would you choose?
This is why we have to take a stand and declare our commitment: No family should have to pay more than half of their paycheck to cover the cost of home.
This is why HabiJax is joining with hundreds of local Habitat organizations across the country to launch our first national advocacy campaign: Cost of Home.
What can you do to help?
Share your sign on social media and tag your policymakers to advocate for the policy solutions you want to see.
Everyone deserves to build the foundation for a strong, healthy future for themselves and their families — no matter where they live or how much money they earn. Every family deserves the chance to thrive.
Help us make that possible. Help us make the #CostOfHome something we all can afford.
